Last week, my mom was in town for the 2009 U.S. Open at the Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, Long Island (if you want to pronounce it correctly, saw lawn-guyland. There you go!) We both signed up to volunteer. It was super fun, but I don't have any pics. Security was a tight as can be! (I mean, Donald Trump and Governor Patterson were there! Things had to be tight!) We both worked in the corporate tents, which consisted of handing out umbrellas and towels because the entire weekend it POURED! It was the most ridiculous thing ever! Rain delay after rain delay occurred. The course had to be pumped of water...literally. The mud was inches thick. Needless to say, no one was singing in the rain...
When we weren't in Long Island (did you say it correctly this time?...), mom and I gallivanted around the city. I showed her where I lived, and we went to see "Shrek the musical." Now, don't roll your eyes at me. It was all for the love of Sutton (Foster). But I ended up laughing a lot and thoroughly enjoying myself. Sure, the cheese factor was incredibly high, but it was still cute. And Sutton was awesome, as expected!
Besides that, work is dominating life, of course! As we all know, the late and great MJ, the King of Pop, Jacko, whatever you wish to call him, passed this week. I know it's already been talked about too much (and poor Farrah Fawcett got completely overshadowed. Sorry, doll...), but it really was the loss of one of the most talented people on Earth. I don't think there's a musical artist in our generation that can't say they were influenced by him in one way or another. That's a major legacy to leave behind, if I've ever heard one! My co-workers and I spent all day yesterday (Friday) playing his music in the office. It was the most fun I've had at work to date.
On a personal level, his music reminds me of jazz class, where most of our routines were to his beats, and Heidi, Lauren and I had one sweet dance to "Beat It", and advanced bio, where Miss Lisa and I would serenade our class with his music every morning. And as a dancer, a role model doesn't get much greater (only for his performance chops, not for other aspects of his life...to be clear.)
RIP, Mr. Jackson...my thoughts and prayers go out to your family, friends and millions of fans who lost a part of their childhood and inspiration on the day you took your last breath...
Here's one of my favorites:

Great post, but I think a video of you and your friends dancing to MJ would have been MUCH more entertaining. Maybe instead of ballet, I'll demand a reenactment of that next time I see you. :)
