New York Moments

I have lived in this amazing city for 3 months and have enjoyed posting the things I notice as I continue to learn and grow in New York. There are many moments I experience that can only happen in New York. I like to call them New York Moments (name suggestions welcome). Here are a few I wanted to share:

  • Secondary Character Sightings — I was always told you never recognize actors on the street in this city until you live here, which is totally true. I haven't had any major sightings yet, but if I had a dollar for every time I've seen secondary characters. You know, those actors that always play the best friend or secretary in movies or TV shows. For instance, this girl who was on Gilmore Girls as Rory's theater friend at Yale and the best friend in "Confessions of a Shopaholic," and just today, passed this woman riding her bike down 9th Ave. I'll let you know when my random run-ins get more major.
  • Delightful to Disgusted Moments — New York is a city with a lot of...character. There are many moments that warm your heart and are just so endearing. There are also the moments where you wonder why people heart this place at all. The other night, I was walking home because it was absolutely delightful out and walked past an open door where an Irish jig lesson was being taught inside. There were 3 couples learning how to clog or river dance or pop and lock — whatever it was, it was adorable! It immediately put a smile on my face, and I thought, "This city is the best." Delightful! When I turned the corner, I noticed a man slightly swaying back and forth in a pay phone booth. As I started to walk past, I smelled the beer and noticed he was releasing everything he drank that night into the corner of the phone booth. To top it off, he proceeded to creeper grin at me as I walked past and yelled out, "If you walk past again, it will make my night, sweetie!" Disgusted. This Delightful to Disgusted Moment brought to you by the characters of New York.
  • Made My Life Memories — While they are rare and few, there are moments I've had living in this city that made my life and will honestly be ones I will remember for ever. Every detail will be engrained in my brain; they were that special. The one that recently stands out was a few weeks ago in my favorite place in the city, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Lincoln Center Plaza always lifts my spirits, and I often go there when I need a solid smile. This particular night, I was just passing through on my way home from running errands on the Upper West Side. I decided to turn down 65th Street to walk past my old building (from the summer I spent interning at LCPA), and as I turned onto 65th from Columbus Ave, I was immediately asked to pause by a large man in a suit. I was answering e-mails on my Blackberry at the time, so I just stopped and didn't really look up. I started to notice people lining up around me, and a few seconds later, those people started gasping and whipping out their cameras. I then hear a British accent say, "Thank you all for waiting. I appreciate it so much." I look up, and Julie freakin' Andrews is standing two feet from me!!! I'm not one to get star struck, but I mean, come on. It was the original Eliza Doolittle, Mary Poppins and Fraulein Maria. Be real. She was whisked away into a building before I could totally process what I just saw, but I'm 99.9% sure she was not a figment of my imagination. I will never forget that moment for the rest of my life.
I will continue to share these New York Moments with you as they happen. I hope you like them!

And because I love you:

You're welcome.
