Inspiration via my iPod

As I was on my evening run, my iPod kept doing this strange thing --- playing one inspirational song after another. I had it on Shuffle, but every song had a message about reaching your goals or the stars or whatever. It was uncanny! I felt like it was trying to tell me something...

I decided to listen to that sign and create an inspirational playlist from my iTunes library. When a confidence boost or just plain feel-good moment is needed in life, I like to turn to these songs to give me that "Yeah...I can do this!" smile that can totally turn your day around. They are my second-wind songs, if you will. I'll even throw in a little explanation of why I chose it, just for giggles.

Defying Gravity (Wicked): If you've ever seen Wicked, it's pretty obvious why I chose this song. It's all about taking chances and defying the norm. It says to never let someone tell you that you can't do something; you should go for it because only you can control your destiny. Oh yeah, and I choose the "Glee" version because I think it's pretty baller to have a male voice on this song.

Don't Rain on my Parade (Funny Girl): Another one with the basic message: Haters can suck it! Ok, so not that harsh, but it is saying, don't let others hold you back. For most things in life, you're the only one your decisions seriously affect, so go for it. After all, "I gotta fly once. I gotta try once. Only can die once, right, sir?" And you always have to listen to the Babs version. It's the most legit!

Put on a Happy Face (Bye, Bye Birdie): Cheesey, I know. But it totally works. Trust me. And for an extra smile, check out the Uncle Jesse version.

Nine People's Favorite Thing ([title of show]): Ok, so this song is about a musical a group is writing, but it totally applies to life. It's from [title of show], and it talks about doing what you like and what makes you happy to please yourself, not please the masses. In the end, it will pay off. (Sidenote: If you love musical theatre, check out this entire show. It's total sattire and will make you laugh like none other!)

Life's What You Make It (Miley Cyrus): Don't judge. It will pump you up. Trust me! This is one of those songs that you crank up in your room and jump around like a 10-year-old. That in itself is fun, and you'll definitely feel peppier post-private dance party.

Hope (Idina Menzel): This song is about not allowing obstacles -- physical, mental, social, economic, whatever -- to keep you from your goals. If you want it, make it happen. Done.

It Will Be Me (Kristin Chenoweth): When you're feeling like you need a reminder that people have got your back, this is your go-to song. You can listen to the lyrics and think of the person (or persons, if you're blessed enough) who would say these exact things in a time of need. It reminds you of your blessings, and that's always super humbling and cleansing.

Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler): On the flip side, this song reminds you to be there for others who are always there for you. Support those who support you, and make it known that you are so grateful for all they've done for you. They're not supporting you in order to get thanks, but it never hurts to show your appreciation for anyone for anything. And...Bette Midler...done.

Stand Back (Joan Osborne): I first heard this song during the opening credits of "Raising Helen" and have been in love with it ever since. I'm all about songs that state if you don't believe in me, get out of my way so I can show you I can do it. This is the ultimate "sock it to 'em" song aka LOVE IT!

Astonishing (Little Women): When everything you've planned for and believed in, changes. It doesn't mean you have to give up on it all. It means you should tweak your plans accordingly, and continue to make it happen. Your passion will get you there no matter what you face on the way. "I must be somewhere I can be astonishing."

Change It (9 to 5):
You're the only one that can change things in your life, so when you think something's not right, change it! "If you don't take the reigns, it's gonna stay the same. Nothing's gonna change if you don't change it."

The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing: The title says it all.

Gotta Start Small (Stephanie J. Block): Small victories lead to big ones. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Take things a step at a time. They will seem more manageable and, therefore, more achievable. I listen to this song when I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with whatever is in front of me. It really works to get started with confidence and a smile.

Fame (Fame): The ultimate "You can suck it!" song. If you think I'll fail, let me prove you wrong. It may seem evil, but everyone wants to prove someone or something (even if it's your own insecurities) wrong at some point in life. This song is amazing for nurturing that feeling.

I'm a Star (The Music of Scott Alan): This is directly written about an aspiring musical theatre performer, but the concepts are universal. It's about knowing you have what it takes but needing that one chance to prove it to someone. And, furthermore, no matter how long it takes, you'll keep trying until you get that chance because your passion, whatever it is, gives you endurance. (P.S. Here's a really awesome version of the song, if you want to see how it's sung by a brilliant beltress)

Electricity (Billy Elliot): I love this song because it's a great description of how it feels when you're doing something you genuinely love but not everyone agrees with it. If you suppress your passions, that will be more painful than whatever you're feeling on the outside. Once you succumb to it, it's a feeling of freedom. Amazing, to say the least.

The C Word (Laura Bell Bundy):
Don't get dirty. This C Word is "chocolate." And when does chocolate make you feel better? Answer: Always!

The Climb (Miley Cyrus): Whether you like her or not, you have to admit this song is inspirational. She didn't write it, so love her lyricist, if not her :) If you want to hear a better version vocally, check this out!

And my favorite inspirational song ever....I Believe (Yolanda Adams): We always listened to this song in the locker room before track meets and even practice. It is amazing and so inspirational. Check out the video from the movie "Honey" to see one of the best dance routines I've ever seen done to this song!

What songs can you add to the list? I'd love to hear what songs inspire you when you need it! Music is powerful. Let it make you smile...
